Beat the heat, keep your lawn looking luscious and neat

Living in Augusta, Georgia, means facing various weather conditions that can damage our lawns. While it's obvious to water your grass during extreme heat to keep it alive, did you know the time of day you water your lawn also matters? Let us share some tricks we've learned over the years to keep those yards looking green and healthy all year round.

When is the right time to turn those sprinklers on?

Watering in the morning can help your lawn stay cooler throughout the hottest parts of the day. Keep a consistent schedule to avoid patching or dryness. On average, water your grass every 2 to 3 days when temperatures are in the 80s. When temperatures reach the 90s and 100s, water every 2 days. Pay close attention to changes in your lawn’s appearance. When your grass needs water, it will take on a bluish-gray tint, and footprints will be more visible. When this occurs, water immediately, regardless of the time of day.

Perform lawn maintenance on a frequent schedule

To help your lawn stay green during hot weather, raise the blades of your lawn mower. Longer grass blades will shade the soil and help reduce water loss due to evaporation. Good ventilation is crucial, as air flowing around the grass blades allows the plants to transpire. Change your mowing route regularly to avoid creating bare patches.

Give your kids a summer job

With your kids out for the summer, your home can start looking like an in-home daycare, and your yard like an amusement park. Build that jungle gym your spouse has been asking for, get the pool ready for fun in the sun, and fire up the grill for some amazing BBQ. Remember to rotate tools, toys, and lawn necessities to keep your grass looking fresh and give it the opportunity to absorb the vitamins and minerals it needs to thrive.
